The 28th General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene held in Indianapolis, IN, is now history. We welcome two new General Superintendents. Dr. David Busic was elected on the 21st ballot to be the 40th general superintendent. He has been serving as President of Nazarene Theological Seminary. Dr. Busic replaces Dr. Jesse Middendorf and should assume jurisdiction of the Southern Florida District through December 31st.
Dr. Gustavo Crocker was elected the 41st general superintendent in the Church of the Nazarene on ballot 53. Dr. Crocker, has been serving as regional director of the Eurasia Region. Dr. Crocker will likely assume jurisdiction of the Southern Florida District on January 1st.
I had the privilege of greeting both of these newly elected leaders on your behalf at a reception in their honor following the Installation Service on the 27th.
Over 140 resolutions were considered and reconsidered before the final gavel fell. While a resolution to reduce the size of the General Board failed, a resolution that reduces the number of delegates to the next GA was approved. The resolution to extend the quadrennium from four years to five was defeated. The next GA will be in 2017.
In addition to the powerful anointing that came as a result of prayer on the services, two amazing events are imprinted on my memory. The impassioned speech of Dr. John Bowling at the beginning of our Thursday morning session. We greeted delegates we did not know, but then got on our knees to seek the face of God before we continued voting. That act of humbling ourselves before God turned the tide toward unanimity. The second memory was the wave of generosity that swept over the delegates. While Dr. Jerry Porter was in the chair on the final morning (27th), someone sent a note to the desk to give an additional $1,000 toward expenses. The offering goal for the week was $300,000. We were considerably short. With 6 of 10 Advisory Board members present and voting, we sent a note pledging $1,000. Others followed suit.
A lady watching the proceedings live streaming via the internet got word to the desk that she would match dollar for dollar up to $25,000. I don’t know what the exact total was, but I recall that by the time the pledging was concluded, $156,000 had been received. To God be the glory! The General Assembly closed with the singing of the doxology.
Our delegates represented us well and I thank them.
David F. Nixon, D.Min.
