I want to use my blog this week to fulfill a commitment I made publicly at our recent SDMI Convention in Fort Myers. Many Evangelical Christians are sensing urgency as America faces its national elections on November 6th. I urge pastors and lay people reading this to respond to the call to fervent prayer for our elections by Americas National Prayer Committee and its member organizations.
Many SFD Pastors and Spouses will be on retreat as September 28th approaches. I am sure some have already mobilized their congregations to this urgent Call to Prayer. Be assured that a portion of our prayer times will be devoted to this call. I would especially like to call SFD Nazarenes to a Great Day of Prayer on Sunday, October 7th, a week from this Sunday.
What might a Day of Prayer like this look like at your church? And would you be willing to lead it? A time of repentance and fresh renewal as individuals, as a church and as a nation. Why not design your service next week around the 2 Chronicles 7:14 theme: If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
Now is the time to mobilize our people to prayer for our nation as the presidential election approaches. 2 Chronicles 7:14 is our mandate. This is not a political action; it is a spiritual action borne from our belief in the Holy Scriptures. God promises rewards to the nation for obedience but punishment for disobedience. In 2 Chronicles 7:11-22 the Lord stresses that his commitment is not to the newly-built temple, but to his people and their relationship with him. If the people choose to stray, the temple will be destroyed. Gods rewards are based on faithfulness to him rather than abilities or achievements (Leadership Bible, p.508). It could not be more clear: we have the power to choose our own destiny. What we do not have power over is the consequences of our decisions.
