District Assembly was an outstanding time of celebration! Joan and I have been overwhelmed by the warm welcome and generosity of the Southern Florida District Nazarenes! Thank you for being so kind to us, and for making our ministry among you a real blessing.
Some highlights from Assembly:
General Superintendent Crockers preaching to us was anointed of the Lord.
We were blessed by the presence of the of our educational leaders: Dr. Dan Boone, president of Trevecca; Dr. Harold Graves, president of Nazarene Bible College, and Dr. Jerry Lambert, representing Nazarene Theological Seminary.
We ordained four outstanding new elders in the Church of the Nazarene.
We reported 100 churches on the district (only six other districts of the 78 in the USA/Canada have more)!
We received 934 New Nazarenes by profession of faith, and our membership increased to 17,614. Our average worship attendance increased to 11,818.
We have work to do on our giving for others as we fell short on meeting our goals: World Evangelism Fund 81%, District Evangelism Fund 71% Pensions and Benefits Fund 69%, Educational Fund 59%.
Several of our Churches Celebrated Key Anniversaries:
- Sebring 70 years
- North Miami Beach 80 years
- Miami Central 90 years
Lake Placid Church burned their mortgage this year
We committed to being ALL IN!!! for ten missional opportunities I highlighted in my DS Report:
- 1. Our Identity as a Holiness People
- 2. Doing Church with Excellence
- 3. Creating Vision and Passion for the Mission
- 4. Finding Richness in our Diversity
- 5. Understanding the Times in which we Minister
- 6. Greater Connectedness for the Gospel
- 7. More Effective Stewardship
- 8. Pastoral Care in our Congregations and for our Pastors
- 9. Growth, Renewal and Evangelism through Camping Ministries
- 10. Church Planting Toward Fulfilling the Harvest 20/20 Vision
The story of Brother Jorge Diaz and his family reminded us of what our ministry is all about transformed lives, families and communities.
The District Assembly Finance Committee presented a major rewrite of their Report, providing helps and direction for our local churches in their stewardship.
I presented an approved plan with six specific benchmarks which will trigger lowering the District Fund percentage from 5% to 4.4% as we hit each goal.
Brother Anthony Haney reported another outstanding year for Lake Placid Camp and Conference Center. The Grace Place will be complete in July 2015, providing 152 beds and two additional worship spaces, and the lodge rooms are being remodeled as motel rooms, for which there is great demand. We praise God for these new tool for ministry, and for the outstanding LPC3 team that serves the church. We are now planning for a new dining facility, multi-purpose gymnasium, a water treatment system and additional improvements and additions to LPC3.
No sooner was District Assembly concluded, and we moved into a DCPI church planter training in Spanish. 15 church planters were trained and 5 persons became certified trainers. This is the second year in a row the district has offered this training. The next DCPI training is set for May 18-21, 2016, in three languages, English, Spanish and French. Be praying for our church planting efforts this year. Our goal is to begin 10 new works, as we strive to fulfill the Harvest 20/20 vision of 20 new Hispanic churches, 20 new Haitian churches, and 20 additional churches.
Now Summer is almost here. Many of us are celebrating graduations and weddings and taking vacations. Summer also brings Youth Camp, Nazarene Youth Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, Childrens Camp and much more. Be sure and check out the online district calendar at www.sfnazarene.org for details on all these upcoming events.
May the 2015-16 fiscal year be one of renewed commitments to the vision of the Great Commission, and may the Lord of the Church bring in a great Harvest of Souls for the Kingdom of God, as the SFD Nazarene engage the mission of Christ on our local, district, regional and global mission fields!
