Bragging is unattractive and God is unimpressed. We are not wise enough or strong enough to ever say we did it on our own. The old hymn comes to mind: “Jesus led me all the way…! After all is said and done, it’s not about me and whatever I think I’ve accomplished. It’s all about Him. He called me to serve Him. I followed. Fifty-three years ago He singled me out and I said yes. Whenever I lacked wisdom He told me to ask for it, and a generous God who doesn’t find fault would give it to me (James 1:5).
He promised that when I am weak, He is strong. “His strength is perfect when my strength is gone… He’ll carry you when you can’t carry on… Raised in His power the weak become strong… His strength is perfect… His strength is perfect!” No boasting or bragging! Only bowing to the Lordship of Christ.
Jim Cymbala said one time that God is attracted to weakness. We may not know much but if we know Him, that’s something worth boasting about. “Our God is greater. Our God is stronger. Our God is higher than any other. Our God is Healer, awesome in power, our God! our God!” wrote Chris Tomlin.
What we don’t see enough of in this world, we see by knowing Him: kindness, justice, righteousness. These our God applauds, not what we have accomplished by His grace and help. Really now, it’s all about Him!
Jeremiah 9:23-24 reads “This is what The Lord says: ‘Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have understanding to know me, that I am The Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,’ declares The Lord.”
