Among the first words of the resurrection are these words from the angel to the women at the tomb. He has risen! He is not here. . He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him (Mark 16:6-7) The more we think about it, the more we have a struggle with those words. That is not the way we want it at all. After all, our Lord was betrayed in Jerusalem. He was accused in Jerusalem. He was tried, scourged and condemned in Jerusalem. And finally, he was put to death in Jerusalem. If he is going to appear again, we want it to happen in JERUSALEM.
We want our I told you sos! If he suffered in Jerusalem, we want Him to appear in Jerusalem. We want Him to stand before those who inflicted pain upon him (and upon us), and experience the satisfaction that comes from proving them wrong. But not in Galilee! Anywhere but Galilee. Galilee was the other side of the tracks. They spoke with a strange dialect and were crude in their manners and customs. NO! NOT GALILEE!
We want the resurrection to heal our wounds and salve our hurts, but Jesus is always directing it to the unfinished tasks which lie ahead and to our unfinished tasks. Galilee represented human need, heartache and sorrow, and the opportunity to minister to those needs. Freud suggests we have a tendency to regress during times of hurt and disappointment. He says we try to regress to a place in life when things were easier and less painful. In extreme cases, even regress to the fetal position of the womb. Jesus will not permit us to regress or go back. He always calls us forward. He calls us to service, ministry and often to sacrifice and pain. But, along with the call forward is also the deep and abiding assurance that He is going ahead of you. When they finally decided to follow the command of the angel and go to Galilee, they found him there. He had been there all the while and even had a meal cooked and ready for them when they arrived. He goes before you to lead you to new opportunities to minister and to higher service. He goes before you to point the way and to call back to us words of confidence and assurance that because we are following Him, we can make it triumphantly and victoriously. Dont go back! Follow Him!
