The George Zimmerman trial for the murder of Trayvon Martin has captured the headlines and air time on television for many days. The prosecution has rested its case and has given its closing arguments. The defense follows suit tomorrow. One of the last witnesses for prosecution was Trayvon’s mother, Sabrina Fulton, who was asked to identify the voice of the person screaming on the 911 call recording. She testified under oath that it was her son. Also taking the stand Friday morning was Martin’s brother, Jahvaris Fulton. Fulton said he was “very close” with his brother and that he recognized the voice on the tape as Trayvon’s.
Responding to questions from defense attorney Mark O’Mara, however, Fulton said he told a reporter that he wasn’t sure who the voice belonged to. “I guess I didn’t want to believe that it was him, that’s why during that interview I said I wasn’t sure,” Fulton said. “Listening to it was clouded by shock and denial and sadness.”
The first witness called by the defense was Gladys Zimmerman, the mother of George Zimmerman, who also testified under oath that the voice on the 911 call was her son. “Identifying the screamer on the 911 call is critical in the racially charged case because prosecutors contend Zimmerman was the aggressor and the defense says he killed Martin in self-defense.
An FBI audio expert testified earlier that science could not definitively identify the voice but that someone very familiar with the voice, such as a relative, might be able to say who it was.” How can both both mother’s be right? Which one is wrong? Which may be lying? The final defense witness called was Robert Zimmerman, George’s father. He testified that it was his son crying out for help.
Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27 NKJV). Can you recognize the voice of the Master when He speaks? Does He have to scream and shout? At the mouth of the cave Elijah heard “a still small voice.” A gentle whisper. Jesus said that His sheep hear when He speaks and He knows them. He knows His sheep not because they speak or cry out. At times all they can do is groan or sigh or just say help. The Lord has no problem knowing whose voice it is. The question is: are you following Him? Not on Twitter but as a Christlike disciple?
