Depending on your political persuasion, and just days after the national elections, you may find yourself mad because your candidate did not win; glad because he did; or just plain sad. It causes us to ask, “Who’s prayers did God answer?” If you seriously and soberly prayed and God gave you the candidate and party you prayed for, you are happy this week. You are sad or mad if the man you prayed would be elected President of the United States was not elected. Either way, God answered prayer. For some the answer was yes; for others the answer was no. It is sad and sobering when God says no, especially when we sincerely believe God should know who the right candidate is.
This morning in my devotions, I looked at the beautifully framed Scripture from Proverbs 3:5-6 on my wall. Do you recall it? “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths.” I wrote in my journal. I do trust in you with all of my heart. I do not understand but help me not to lean on my own understanding. In all my ways I will continue to acknowledge you. Now, Lord, please direct my paths.”
I will resist the temptation to become cynical and hopeless. Do you remember our Call to Prayer on October 7, 2012? The prayer I encouraged us to pray then can still be prayed now: 2 Chronicles 7:14. Only God’s people can pray this prayer: “If my people who are called by my name…” Our relationship with him grants us the right to pray this prayer. November 6th was not the deadline against which we were working to see this prayer answered. Pray on! God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, nor are his ways our ways.
I wonder what God is feeling today? I wonder if he is mad, sad or glad? Did the re-election of President Barack Obama put a holy smile on His face? Or did it cause Him to sob uncontrollably? Perhaps somewhere in the mixture of gladness, sadness or madness (human feelings we extrapolate on to God) please know that God still loves the world and the Americans who inhabit it. Yes, even those who boo Him, mock him, and try to write Him off or out. He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). That makes me really glad!
