With a heart of gratitude and a rekindled spirit to seek God, Haitian Nazarenes from across the USA and Canada gathered July 12-15 at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center (Port St. Lucie, Florida) under the leadership of Rev. Pascal Permis, the Nazarene USA-Canada Haitian Ministries Director; Global Ministry staff and Dr. David Nixon, Southern Florida District Superintendent.
From the beginning, Rev. Permis emphasized the threefold purpose of the gathering: 1) Challenge Gods people and to be challenged as leaders to holy living, 2) Inform leaders and laypeople about the basic operation of the Church of the Nazarene, and 3) Renew fellowship and camaraderie among colleagues and Gods people.
The Evening services-Challenge to holy living.
Rev Permis said, We praise God for his faithfulness! God has gone beyond our expectations in the evening services and workshops. The evening services averaged over 700 people in attendance. These are people who came to seek God and met Him in a very remarkable way, Permis said. The worship services were led by Rev. Renet Permis of Indiantown Evangelical and by Rev Wilner Jean Pierre of Bradenton First Haitian Church of the Nazarene.
God truly knows our spiritual thirst, said Permis. Through the preaching ministry, he has used his servants like Dr. Nixon, Brother Lionel Y. Latouche, Jr., Ms. Gabrielle Pierre and Dr. Oliver Phillips to make us aware of the need to restore our relationship with God so that the glory of God can truly be in our midst. He said, The scene was like an old fashion revival where after the preaching ended, young people as well as older folks were flooded to the front to seek God till 11p.m. and beyond.
The Educational aspect of the Conference.
Another highlight of the conference was informing pastors and lay people about the importance to be team players in reaching the lost for Jesus Christ. During the day workshops were conducted on topics designed to make people aware of their interconnectedness as the people of God in the Church of the Nazarene. Dr. Bill Wiesman, Evangelism and New Church Development director for the Church of the Nazarene, was one of the workshop presenters who spoke on reaching the lost through new churches.
Other presenters and topics included: Dr. Nixon – leadership skills, Southern Florida NMI President, Dennis Moore – funding the mission, Southern Florida Working & Witness Coordinator Rev. Roy Shuck engaging the church in short-term missions, Rev. Luc Pierre – understanding the laws of the land, Dr. Dumerzier Charles understanding the structure of the Church of the Nazarene, Southern Florida District Treasurer John K. Paul – the local Church and its finances, Ms. Gabrielle Pierre – reaching and leading the 2nd generation, Rev. Lionel Latouche, Jr. – leading Gods people through worship, and Rev. Permis – Christian ethics.
Haitian Nazarenes say this conference is the best platform for them to gather as family and friends in an atmosphere conducive to learning new ways to carry out the tasks of God. To that effect, the Nazarene Haitian community expresses its appreciation to the Global ministry center staff, and all the District Superintendents who encouraged their people to attend this convention.
