I ran across the Parable of the Twins before Birth today as I prepared for the funeral of Roberto Perez Sr., co-pastor with his wife, Olena, of our Hollywood Primera Iglesia del Nazareno.
Twins were talking to each other in the womb. The sister said to her brother, I believe there is life after birth. Her brother protested, No, no, this is all there is. This is a dark cozy place, & we have nothing else to do but to cling to the cord that feeds us. The little girl insisted, There must be something more than this dark light where there is freedom to move. Still she could not convince her twin brother.
After some silence, the sister said hesitantly, I have something else to say, & Im afraid you wont believe that either, but I think there is a mother. Her brother became furious, A mother! he shouted. What are you talking about? I have never seen a mother, & neither have you. Who put that idea in your head? As I told you, this place is all we have. Why do you always want more? This is not such a bad place, after all. We have all we need, so lets be content.
The sister was quite overwhelmed by her brothers response and for a while didnt dare say anything more. But she couldnt let go of her thoughts, and since she had only her twin brother to speak to, she finally said, Dont you feel these squeezes every once in awhile? Theyre quite unpleasant and sometimes even painful.
Yes, he answered, Whats so special about that? Well, the sister said, I think these squeezes are there to get us ready for another place, much more beautiful than this, where we will see our mother face-to-face. Dont you think that is exciting? The brother didnt answer. He was fed up with the foolish talk of his sister and felt that the best thing would be simply to ignore her and hope that she would leave him alone.
The story illustrates that from the perspective of the mothers womb, birth is a mystic step into the unknown. So is death. It is a certain stepwe all will take it because it is appointed unto us once to die. We do not know when or how we will die, but it is the final earthly stepthe end of our life and earthly responsibilities. Death is a departure stepa time when we say farewell to our loved ones and friends and all that we have loved and enjoyed in life. It will always be a solitary stepour friends and loved ones cannot accompany us. But PTL, our Savior awaits us! The last step is to the Lord Jesus Christ whom we will see face-to-face. And he will lead us home! We will enjoy His companionship throughout eternity. Dont you think that is exciting? I sure do!
