Many more people than ever before are asking how to be involved in the Southern Florida District’s ten-day Daniel Fast. Time and space does not permit a full study of all the particulars. But if you are reading this blog from our website, then I know you are able to Google or Bing. Want to know more? Just type in Daniel Fast and follow to any number of websites and resource materials.
As for Daniel Fast regulars, those who are beginning the New Year for the fifth consecutive year doing the Daniel Fast, it has become for us something we highly anticipate, not just for the physical benefits we know we will derive but for the spiritual blessings that always accompany self-sacrifice. I love this quote I found in Susan Gregory’s 2010 book on The Daniel Fast: “Sometimes you are so hungry, that the only way to be fed is to fast.”
Here’s what we’re learning. When we begin the New Year seeking The Lord through fasting, we are making a conscious choice to live a faith-driven life. We’re seeking first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness early in the year. By faith we believe that everything we need will be added to us: Matthew 6:33.
Think about pursuing “righteousness.” I love the NLT’s translation of Isaiah 58:8, “Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind.” When we fast the way The Lord intends for us to fast, salvation will come along with healing. But don’t miss what’s next: “godliness (righteousness) will lead you forward.” “Your faith,” writes Jentezen Franklin in his book on Fasting, “…will cause you to move into areas where you would not have moved if you had not fasted.” God may open doors for you that you never dreamed possible. The influence of your godly life over family, friends, colleagues and fellow worshipers, will have a ripple effect.
The phrase I love from 58:8 is “the glory of The Lord will protect you from behind.” As I preached last Sunday at Bradenton Bayshore from Isaiah 58, I was able to boldly proclaim to the people anticipating a new year with fiscal and financial uncertainty, that God has your back! Move forward in faith. The God in whom we are trusting is watching out for anything that may try to sneak up behind us! So begin fasting with us and don’t leave the glory of The Lord behind. He has doors He will open to each of us as a direct result of His promises being fulfilled because we are fasting.
When we fast with the right motives, our confidence is that God will hear and answer. It has worked for others. Why should it not work for you? One person testified after the first week or so of fasting, “…I feel good spiritually, emotionally, and physically, plus I have lost ten pounds!” This blog will be posted on our Facebook page. In closing, we would like to hear from our readers, what fasting has meant to you. You don’t have to write a lot, just a phrase, a sentence, or a paragraph of what God is doing in you and through you because you are fasting. This is one other way your godly influence can go out like ripples in a pond.
Remember, we start on January 10th and end on January 19th at the Prayer and Missional Summit here at Lake Placid. We plan to break our Daniel Fast together with a great fellowship meal.
